Amanda Mae Nelson Cuffey

–

Richmond, Virginia

On the morning of January 21, 2026, Amanda Mae Nelson Cuffey answered the Lord’s call and entered her eternal rest. “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8), and we rejoice knowing she now dwells in His perfect peace.

Born on February 15, 1940, in Louisa County, Virginia, Amanda was the beloved daughter of the late Juanita and Floyd Nelson. As the youngest of ten children, she grew up surrounded by the strength, love, and unity that shaped her unwavering devotion to family. She accepted Christ Jesus at an early age and her parents poured into her the values that would guide her entire life...faith, perseverance, and a deep commitment to caring for others.

Amanda graduated from A.G. Richardson High School and went on to become a proud alumna of Virginia State University, then Virginia State College. There she nurtured her passion for learning, civil rights, and service. These are principles that she carried with her in every chapter of her life. “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord” (Colossians 3:23), and Amanda lived this truth with grace and conviction.

She later married the love of her life, Sonnie Greene Cuffey, after meeting him during summer jobs in Atlantic City. He romanced her by playing his trumpet outside of her summer apartment each evening. "He finally wore me down with that dang trumpet", she would say as she lovingly told that story throughout their 42-year union. Their marriage was a testament to devotion, respect, and shared purpose. Together they built a home grounded in love and filled with warmth, laughter, and lots of good food. Their steadfast partnership was a living example of “two becoming one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).

Amanda and Sonnie were blessed with four children, Sonnie, Greg, Bryant, and Candice. She poured into them the same love and wisdom she had received, teaching them to walk in faith, to serve others, and to stand firm in who they are. Her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her are living reflections of her light.
Amanda’s life was a beautiful offering one of service, humility, and quiet strength. She touched hearts, uplifted spirits, and lived out the words of Proverbs 31: “Her children arise and call her blessed… many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

Though we feel the massive weight of her absence, we celebrate the fullness of her journey and the joy of her heavenly homecoming. Amanda has fought the good fight, finished her race, and kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7). Her legacy endures in every life she touched. May we honor her by living with the same love, dignity, and faith that she so beautifully embodied. If you don’t have a relationship with Christ Jesus, please accept this as your personal invitation. If you already know Him, we encourage you to grow closer. May God Bless and keep the family and friends of Amanda Nelson Cuffey during this turbulent time.
